December 8, 11:00 am – 1:00 pm EDT
The Digital Healthcare Innovation Summit (DHIS) is an unparalleled annual gathering of the leading innovators, investors, payers, providers and policymakers who are driving the digital health revolution. While COVID-19 forced us to postpone this year’s in-person event, we didn’t want the compelling stories that drive our community forward to stop. Until we can meet in person next year, we’re launching the DHIS Spotlight Series. Like the conference, this series will feature discussions (panels or 1-on-1 conversations) that explore relevant topics for digital health innovators and business leaders.
This first episode will feature three exclusive interviews:
11:00 am EPISODE INTRODUCTION: Delphine O'Rourke, JD – Partner, Goodwin
11:05 am KEYNOTE INTERVIEW: The understanding of behavioral health and strategies around it has evolved greatly over the past couple decades. This keynote interview will examine this progress, as well as the role start-up and large companies play in innovation and adoption of behavioral health technology. This conversation will also explore the excitement and capital flowing into this field right now, while raising any potential downsides and offering advice for entrepreneurs who are currently operating or planning to start behavioral health technology companies. Guest: Cara McNulty, DPA – President, Behavioral Health & EAP at Aetna, a CVS Health Company Interviewed by: Dan Gebremedhin, MD, MBA – Partner, Flare Capital Partners
11:30 am ENTREPRENEURS AND START-UP EXECUTIVES PANEL: Reimbursement coverage for behavioral health services hit a milestone in 2008 when Congress passed the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act (MHPAEA) which required insurers to equalize coverage for behavioral health and medical health benefits in terms of co-pays, deductibles, lifetime caps and access to providers. Fast forward to present day when demand for behavioral health services outpaces the availability of treatment and the COVID-19 pandemic ushers in unprecedented levels of anxiety and isolation. The heightened demand for new service models is driving a shift towards virtual and digital behavioral care and opens tremendous opportunities for innovative start-ups as regulatory and reimbursement barriers diminish. Investors recognize the enormous unmet medical need and opportunity as of late, pumping $588 million into behavior healthtech start-ups in the first half of 2020, according to Rock Health.
